The rise of social media has profoundly changed the way in which we tell stories. More than 4.95 billion people worldwide have been on this little corner of the Internet to hear their voice, their experiences, and their ideas without the barriers of traditional media.

One of the most notable differences between the digital world and traditional media is the immediateness of the engagement and interaction through platforms like Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and blogs (such as this one!), where user-generated content thrives, providing individuals with a space to tell their personal stories and also create social change.

By allowing individuals to explore and articulate their thoughts through narratives they’re able to control, digital storytelling serves as an instrument to empower and lets them establish themselves as thought leaders. Not only that, but also storytelling in the digital world has come to play a significant role in activism; be it through hashtag movements or viral campaigns, it serves as a powerful tool to influence public policy and spark conversations on issues such as gender equality, climate change, or racial issues.

Visual storytelling platforms should not be undermined. Instagram, for instance, has transformed storytelling through engaging images, helping users to create emotional connections with their audiences. The same happens with YouTube, where blogs and documentaries engage viewers in never-seen-before content.

However, digital storytelling also presents its own set of challenges. Privacy concerns, managing a curated online identity, and dealing with online harassment are all important issues that storytellers must navigate. It is crucial to develop strategies, whether it be by the pertinent institutions or by setting more effective user guidelines, for managing negativity, safeguarding mental well-being, and fostering supportive online environments to ensure that storytelling remains a positive experience.

It is undeniable that the variation of AI and the popularity of new forms of storytelling, such as podcasting, live streaming, and VR, will have an impact on how we tell stories. But alas, that is a story for another day.
